Jean-Claude Lapalu
about
BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES, BROUILLY, FranceBased in the village of Saint-Étienne-la-Varenne, in the heart of the Beaujolais-Villages, Brouilly, and Côte de Brouilly appellations, Jean-Claude Lapalu has been crafting wines under his own name since 1996. Born into a family of winegrowers, he represents the third generation to farm the family's vineyards. For decades, however, the estate's grapes were sold to the local cooperative.
After taking over the family vineyards in 1982, Jean-Claude continued this tradition for more than a decade. It wasn't until the 1996 vintage that he made a defining decision: to vinify his own grapes and bottle wines that truly reflected the character of his vineyards.
Like many winemakers of his generation, Jean-Claude initially followed the conventional practices taught at the time—short macerations, cultured yeasts, and chaptalization. But driven by curiosity, careful observation, and countless conversations with like-minded growers, he gradually questioned these methods. Vintage after vintage, he embraced a more intuitive and natural approach, relying on indigenous yeasts, eliminating chaptalization, reducing intervention in the cellar, and allowing each wine to express its origin with greater honesty.
His transformation extended well beyond the cellar. Convinced that great wine begins in the vineyard, Jean-Claude adopted meticulous farming practices focused on healthy soils, biodiversity, and vine balance. This philosophy naturally brought him into the pioneering circle of Beaujolais' natural wine movement alongside renowned growers such as Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, and Yvon Métras. By the late 1990s, his wines had already become benchmarks for a new generation of Beaujolais.
During the mid-2000s, Jean-Claude gradually transitioned from leasing vineyards to owning them, giving him the freedom to shape both his estate and his cellar around his uncompromising philosophy. Today, the domaine spans just over 9 hectares of Gamay across Beaujolais-Villages, Brouilly, and Côte de Brouilly. The vineyards are rooted in shallow granite soils, farmed under certified organic practices, with plowed soils and no herbicides or synthetic chemicals.
In the cellar, Jean-Claude remains true to his minimalist philosophy. Gentle, low-intervention winemaking results in wines of remarkable purity and energy, where vibrant fruit, freshness, and a profound sense of place always take center stage.
